The Guru-Shishya Parampara is the very soul of the oral tradition of India, and embodies the living and learning relationship between master and pupil. Evolving from the era of the great Indian seers, what the tradition signifies is the complete emotional, intellectual and spiritual surrender of the ardent shishya to the guru.
Beginning in the early oral traditions of the Upanishads (c. 2000 BC), the guru-shishya relationship has evolved into a fundamental component. The term "Upanishad" derives from the Sanskrit words "upa" (near), "ni" (down) and "sad" (to sit) — so it means "sitting down near".
In the Vedik period, the knowledge of Vidya (Art) is communicated from guru to shishya by oral lore.
It was also applicable for the Indian Classical Music, wether it is Vocal, instrumental, Dance or Percussion.
My Guru Pt. MANIK MUNDE says that in Guru-Shishya Parampara, the Guru has to become a Cleaner.
Because, whatever is the dust the student is carrying in his mind, in the forms of Doubts & questions has to be cleaned by the Guru. The Advantage of this Guru-Shishya Parampara is that, the Guru look after the Shishya personally and very carefully.
In the Guru-Shishya Tradition the Guru is caring, supporting, teaching and making a winner out of the Shishya, whereas the Student(Shishya) has to be very much concious, scholarly ready and Devoted to his Teacher (Guru).
Otherwise the Shishya can not learn or master the Vidya (The Art).
The person can not be a good Guru unless he is a good Shishya, Great masters say.
The best carrier of the Art (Vidya) is Guru-Shishya Parampara.
